Cingjing (清境, also written Qingjing) and Hehuanshan (合歡山) are Taichung's way into the high mountains. Cingjing Farm is a hillside of sheep pastures above Puli; past it, Provincial Highway 14A keeps climbing to Wuling, the highest point on Taiwan's road network, among the 3,000-meter peaks of Hehuanshan. Cingjing works as a long day trip by bus. Hehuanshan really needs a car or a tour, a clear forecast, and respect for the altitude.
- Bus to Cingjing to Puli, then 6664, 6659 or 6658 up the mountain
- Green Green Grassland 08:00 to 17:00 daily; NT$270
- Hehuanshan 2,900 to 3,421 meters; Wuling 3,275 meters
- Time A long day for Cingjing; an early start and a car for Hehuanshan
Cingjing Farm (清境農場)
The farm's main sight is Green Green Grassland (青青草原), open slopes with grazing sheep and wide mountain views. Cingjing Farm lists:
- Hours: 08:00 to 17:00 daily.
- Entry: NT$270 (from 1 January 2025). On weekdays, a full ticket bought at the grassland counter or on the farm's website comes with NT$60 to spend in the farm shop that day.
- Sheep show: 09:30 and 14:30 on weekends, national holidays and school vacations (not on Wednesdays), about 30 minutes.
- Horse show: 10:45 and 15:45 daily, at the Guanshan pasture, about 30 minutes.
How to get to Cingjing by bus
First get to Puli (埔里). From central Taichung or HSR Taichung Station, the farm lists Nantou Bus 6670 (the Sun Moon Lake bus, on its runs via Puli), Nantou and Taichung Bus 6899 and Quan Hang Bus 6268, about every 20 to 30 minutes. It also lists a Nantou Bus Taichung to Puli service that carries on to the Cingjing stops, running roughly 08:00 to 12:00.
From Puli, Nantou Bus runs the Cingjing Line (清境線) up the mountain: 6664 to Cingjing Farm (NT$123), 6659 to Songgang (NT$129) and 6658 to Cuifeng (翠峰, NT$149). On the timetable we checked, there were 12 trips each way, the first leaving Puli at 06:00 and the last at 16:35, and the last bus down leaving Cuifeng at 19:35. Get off at the Cingjing Farm visitor center or Green Green Grassland stop. Pay by transit card or cash (no change given). → The 6670 bus
Hehuanshan (合歡山)
The Hehuanshan National Forest Recreation Area runs from 2,900 to 3,421 meters, inside Taroko National Park, and Taiwan's Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency says it is about 18°C colder than the plains. Three of Taiwan's Hundred Peaks are here: Hehuanshan Main Peak, East Peak and Shimenshan. The road tops out at Wuling (武嶺), at 3,275 meters, and Song Syue Lodge (松雪樓) is the visitor stop near the top.
Getting there
No Taiwan Tourist Shuttle route goes to Wuling: the Cingjing Line ends at Cuifeng, well below the pass. To go higher, drive yourself or join a tour. Parking at the recreation area costs NT$25 per half hour Monday to Thursday and NT$30 Friday to Sunday and on holidays, with the first 15 minutes free, and the machines take only NT$100, NT$50 and NT$10 cash.
Weather, altitude and closures
- Cold snaps close the road. When it snows or ices, the Highway Bureau closes stretches of Provincial Highway 14A or lets through only cars with snow chains, as it did between Cuifeng and Song Syue Lodge and at Wuling in December 2024 and January 2025. Check the road status the day you go.
- Altitude. You climb from near sea level to over 3,000 meters in a few hours. Go slowly, drink water, and head down if you feel unwell. If you have heart or lung problems, ask your doctor before you go.
- Dress for winter, even when Taichung is warm.
- Lunar New Year: Song Syue Lodge stops taking overnight guests the day before Lunar New Year's Eve and closes on the Eve itself.
Good to know: the mountain roads are steep, narrow and full of bends, and weekends bring heavy traffic. A weekday with a clear forecast is the day for Hehuanshan; on a cloudy day, Cingjing alone is enough.
