The short answer: stay near Taichung Station or in the 7th Redevelopment Zone (七期). Taichung is more spread out than Taipei and has one MRT line, so where you sleep decides how you get around. Near Taichung Station you can walk to the old town and catch regular trains and the Taiwan Boulevard buses. In the 7th Redevelopment Zone you are on the MRT Green Line, one ride from the high speed rail, with the opera house on your doorstep.
Each area below lists its train or MRT stations, with Green Line codes as Taichung Metro uses them, and the buses that do the job where the MRT doesn't reach.
At a glance

Taichung Station
The practical base for the old town. Taichung Station (臺中車站) is the city's main railway station, and the restored 1917 station building, Miyahara, the Lyuchuan Canal and the Second Market are all a short walk away, with Taichung Park about 1 km north. Regular trains run from here, which helps for day trips by rail, and the Taiwan Boulevard buses (300 to 308) carry you west to the museums and the 7th Redevelopment Zone. The area is older and busier than the west side.
Getting around: TRA Taichung Station; Bus 300 to 308 along Taiwan Boulevard. No MRT. → Central Taichung guide · Day trips
West District and the Calligraphy Greenway
Leafy and walkable, with the 3.6 km Calligraphy Greenway running between the National Museum of Natural Science and the free National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts. Cafes, Shenji New Village and Park Lane by CMP are all here. It is a pleasant, calmer base for a slower trip, but there is no MRT, so plan on buses and the odd taxi.
Getting around: Bus 300 to 310 from Taichung Station to the science museum; 71 or 75 to the art museum; shuttle bus 159 from the high speed rail station. → West Taichung guide
Xitun: the 7th Redevelopment Zone
Modern Taichung: wide boulevards, department stores, parks, Taichung City Hall and Toyo Ito's National Taichung Theater. This is the area with the best MRT access, which matters if you arrive by high speed rail, because the Green Line runs straight from HSR Taichung Station (119) to Taichung City Hall (110). The trade-off is distance from the old town, which is a bus or taxi ride east.
Getting around: G Green Line: Taichung City Hall (110), Wenxin Yinghua (109); Bus Taiwan Boulevard routes toward Taichung Station; bus 161 from the HSR station to the theater. → Xitun guide · National Taichung Theater
Fengjia
The streets around Feng Chia University and its huge night market. Stay here if eating your way through Fengjia Night Market every evening sounds like the point of the trip. It is lively, but noisy late, and there is no MRT station beside it.
Getting around: Bus or Taxi; nearest MRT Wenxin Yinghua (Green Line, 109), then a bus or taxi. → Fengjia Night Market
Wuri and the HSR station
HSR Taichung Station is in Wuri, south of the city. Staying beside it only makes sense for a single night between trains, an early departure, or a day trip that starts from the station. The MRT links it to the 7th Redevelopment Zone, but the old town is a longer trip.
Getting around: HSR HSR Taichung Station; G Green Line: HSR Taichung Station (119), Wuri (118). → From the HSR station into the city · Getting to Taichung
Good to know: check the walk from your hotel to the nearest station or Taiwan Boulevard bus stop on a map before you book. In Taichung the bus stop often matters more than the MRT, and a ten-minute walk feels long in summer heat.
Our pick
For a first visit focused on the old town, the Calligraphy Greenway and day trips by train, stay near Taichung Station. If you are arriving and leaving by high speed rail, or want the MRT and the modern city, stay in the 7th Redevelopment Zone near Taichung City Hall Station (110).
