Taichung is spread out, and it has one MRT line rather than a web of them, so it helps to think of it as a handful of areas joined by buses. The old town grew up around Taichung Station. West of it, the Calligraphy Greenway runs between two national museums. Northwest of that, Xitun is the new city of towers, the opera house and Fengjia Night Market. North District has the old park and the science museum, and Nantun in the southwest has Rainbow Village and one of the oldest streets in town.
- Central DistrictCentral Taichung and the old townThe 1917 station, Miyahara, the Lyuchuan Canal and the Second Market. Train: Taichung Station.
- West DistrictWest Taichung and the Calligraphy GreenwayShenji New Village, the free fine arts museum and Jingming 1st Street. Bus 71, 75 or 300 to 310.
- XitunThe 7th Redevelopment Zone and FengjiaThe National Taichung Theater, City Hall and Fengjia Night Market. MRT Taichung City Hall (110).
- North DistrictTaichung Park, Yizhong and the science museumThe 1908 lake pavilion, student food streets and Taiwan's first science museum.
- NantunRainbow Village and the old streetThe painted village today, and Nantun Old Street. MRT Nantun (113), or taxi.

Good pairings for one day: Central and North (walkable from Taichung Station), West and North (the greenway joins them), and Xitun's theater followed by Fengjia for dinner. → Itineraries
Good to know: the Green Line runs from Beitun, much of the way along Wenxin Road, to the high speed rail station, so it serves Xitun and Nantun but not the old town. For Central, West and North, the Taiwan Boulevard buses from Taichung Station are your MRT. An EasyCard or iPASS works on the MRT. → Getting around · Where to stay
