About Inside Taichung

Two Taiwan locals who visit often, and know who to ask.

Hi, we're Vicky and Jason. Inside Taichung is our guide to Taiwan's big, sunny city in the middle of the west coast, written for people planning a visit now.

Our Taichung

We'll be straight with you: we have never lived in Taichung. We visit as tourists, and we're there often. So we see the city the same way you will, arriving with a list and figuring out how to get between places.

The difference is that we do it as Taiwan locals. We read the signs, we know how things work here, and we know the locals to ask. When a place on this site comes with a tip, like the time to go or the thing to order, that's usually where it came from. That's why we still call ourselves insiders.

Ask the people we know in Taichung where a first-timer should go, and five places come up every time: Gaomei Wetlands at sunset, Miyahara, Fengjia Night Market, the National Taichung Theater and Shenji New Village. They're the heart of this guide.

Vicky

Vicky was born and raised in Tainan, further down the west coast. She brings the local's view: how Taiwanese people actually travel around their own country, what's worth the queue, and how to ask for what you want.

Jason

Jason is the foreigner of the pair. He has lived in Taiwan for around a decade. Like every newcomer, he had to learn things the hard way: which card to tap, which bus to catch, what the sign on the door means. That's exactly the stuff visitors need, so when something needs translating for a first-timer, that's Jason's job.

How we write this guide

Every fact on this site comes from an official source or established press, and every page says when we last checked it. Hours, fares and prices change, so we link the official pages and tell you to check before you go. We tell you how to reach every place, because in Taichung that's the hard part. And we'll always be honest about what's worth your time.

Welcome to Taichung. We're glad you're here.
