Fengjia Night Market (逢甲夜市), also spelled Fengchia or Feng Chia, is the big one: the city's tourism office calls it one of Taichung's most famous night markets, and it spreads over several streets beside Feng Chia University in Xitun District. It is packed with creative street food, cheap clothes and phone shops, and it is one of the five places we send everyone. Go hungry, after dark, with cash.

How the market works
Fengjia is not one street but a whole district of them, within about a kilometer of Feng Chia University. The city's tourism office counts in the Fengjia Wenhua Night Market and the stretches of Xitun Road, Fengjia Road and Fuxing Road. Shops open from midday, but the market really fills up in the evening, when the food stalls light up. NightMarket.tw suggests arriving between 17:00 and 19:00, before the biggest crowds; weekend evenings are the busiest, and seating is scarce.
What to eat
Fengjia is known for new snacks as much as old ones, so walk a loop first and see what has a queue. NightMarket.tw's list of what to eat at Fengjia Night Market includes:
- sausage wrapped in sticky rice
- flame-torched beef cubes
- a giant fried chicken cutlet
- cheese potatoes and sweet potato balls
- stinky tofu, if you are brave
- sesame oil chicken soup and taro desserts
Beyond the food there are games, electronics and phone shops, and the clothes the city's tourism office calls unique and fairly priced.
Good to know: bring cash in small notes. NightMarket.tw cites a 2023 survey in which only about 38% of Fengjia's shops took mobile payment. Some of the roads stay open to scooters, so keep to the side and watch behind you.
Getting there
No MRT station is right beside the market. Take the Green Line to MRT Wenxin Yinghua Station (Green Line, 109) and then a bus or taxi for the last stretch, or come by bus or taxi from Taichung Station. After a late night, a taxi back to your hotel is the easy way home.
