Getting around

Taxis and Uber in Taichung

Sights are spread out and the MRT is one line, so a taxi earns its keep here.

In a city with one MRT line and sights far apart, a taxi is often the sensible choice: late at night, with luggage, as a group of three or four, or for places a long way from a bus route. Taichung's taxis are metered, with fares set by the city, and Uber works here too.

  • Flag fall NT$85 for the first 1,250 m
  • Then NT$5 for every 200 m
  • Waiting and slow traffic NT$5 for every 60 seconds below 5 km/h
  • Night surcharge NT$20 per trip from 23:00 to 06:00, decided by the time you get in

Fares

These are the fares Taichung City Government set from August 1, 2023, and they are what the meter charges. Between 23:00 and 06:00, NT$20 is added to each trip; a trip that crosses 23:00 or 06:00 is charged by the time you got in. For about ten days around Lunar New Year the city adds a holiday surcharge: in 2024 it was NT$50 per trip, from February 5 to February 14, charged through the meter. Drivers may not add it unless the meter shows the holiday rate.

Where to find one

  • HSR Taichung Station has a taxi pickup area. → HSR station to the city
  • Taichung International Airport has metered taxis at the International Terminal, B1. → Getting to Taichung
  • Elsewhere, wave one down on a main road, or ask your hotel or a restaurant to call one.

Uber

Uber operates in Taichung around the clock. Besides standard rides, the app offers UberXL for up to six people and lets you book a local taxi, and it covers rides to and from Taichung Airport. It is handy if you would rather not explain an address in Chinese.

Good to know: have your destination written in Chinese, or the place's Chinese name on a map app, to show the driver. Every place in this guide has its Chinese name in brackets for exactly this. Carry some cash in case the driver does not take cards.
