The short answer: two full days for the city itself, three if you want a day trip. Taichung's sights are spread across a few areas joined by buses and one MRT line, so you get more done if you take one area at a time instead of crossing town and back. With two days you can see the five places we send everyone to: Miyahara, Shenji New Village, the National Taichung Theater, Fengjia Night Market and Gaomei Wetlands at sunset.
One day
Enough for a good taste, and a common stop between Taipei and Tainan. Spend the morning in the old town around Taichung Station (the 1917 station and Miyahara), take a Taiwan Boulevard bus west for Shenji New Village and the Calligraphy Greenway, see the National Taichung Theater in the late afternoon, and end with dinner at Fengjia Night Market. → The 1-day plan
Two days
The sweet spot for most visitors. Day one in the old town and along the greenway, with the science museum or the free fine arts museum. Day two in Xitun for the theater and City Hall, then out to the coast for Gaomei Wetlands at sunset, and Fengjia afterward. → The 2-day plan
Three days
Add a day trip. Sun Moon Lake is the classic, and Lugang's old temples and streets are another favorite. Or slow down: Taichung Park, Yizhong Street, Nantun Old Street and Rainbow Village fill a gentle third day without leaving the city. → The 3-day plan · Day trips
Four days or more
Use Taichung as your base for central Taiwan. The city sits in the middle of the west coast, with the high speed rail and regular trains, so the mountains and lakes inland and the old towns of Changhua County are all within day-trip reach. Xitou's forest, the high country at Qingjing and Hehuanshan, and the Dakeng hiking trails each take a day of their own. → Taichung as a base for central Taiwan
At a glance
| Days | What you get |
|---|---|
| 1 | Old town, Shenji New Village, the theater, Fengjia |
| 2 | All of the above, plus museums and Gaomei Wetlands at sunset |
| 3 | Add Sun Moon Lake or Lugang, or a slow day in the city |
| 4+ | Central Taiwan from one base: Xitou, Qingjing, Dakeng, Changhua |
Good to know: plan around Mondays. The National Museum of Natural Science and the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts are both closed, so Monday is a good day for Gaomei, the night markets or a day trip.
