Most visitors arrive by high speed rail. HSR Taichung Station is on the main north to south line, under an hour from Taipei and Tainan, but it is in Wuri on the edge of the city, so plan the last leg in. Taiwan Railway trains stop at Taichung Station in the old center. Taichung International Airport has domestic and international flights, and intercity buses link Taichung with the rest of Taiwan.

Direct coaches also run from the airport to Taichung, about 2 hours according to the Taichung Tourism Bureau; check times and fares with the operator before you travel. Inside Taipei's guide to getting to Taipei covers the Airport MRT in detail.
By intercity bus
Coach companies including Kuo-Kuang, Ubus and Free Go run between Taichung and the rest of Taiwan. They are cheaper than the train and slower: the Taichung Tourism Bureau gives about 2 hours 30 minutes from Taipei and 3 hours from Kaohsiung.
Good to know: HSR Taichung Station and Taiwan Railway's Taichung Station are different stations, about 12 minutes apart by local train. Check which one your hotel is near before you choose a train.
