The short answer: watch the sun set over the tidal flats at Gaomei, eat ice cream in an old eye clinic, spend an evening at Fengjia Night Market, walk through Toyo Ito's opera house, and wander the little shops of Shenji New Village. Those are the five places we and the locals we know send everyone first. Then add the museums, the old park, a painted village and the drinks and sweets Taichung is known for.
Each item links to our full guide, with hours, prices and directions.
The five to do first
1. Watch the sunset at Gaomei Wetlands
Gaomei Wetlands (高美濕地) is a protected stretch of tidal flats on the coast in Qingshui District, with a 691-meter boardwalk out over the mud and eighteen wind turbines along the shore. The boardwalk follows the tide: it closes around each high tide and at sunset, and the times for each day are posted ahead. Aim for the afternoon slot and stay for the sky.

2. Eat ice cream at Miyahara
Miyahara (宮原眼科) was the largest eye clinic in Taichung when the Japanese ophthalmologist Miyahara Takeo built it in 1927. Today the pastry company Dawn Cake has restored it, with an interior the city compares to Hogwarts, and it sells ice cream, chocolates and pastries. Open 10:00 to 21:00.

3. Spend an evening at Fengjia Night Market
Fengjia Night Market (逢甲夜市) is a whole district of streets beside Feng Chia University, packed with creative street food, cheap clothes and phone shops. The shops open at midday, but most food stalls get going after 17:00. Bring cash in small notes.

4. Walk through the National Taichung Theater
The National Taichung Theater (臺中國家歌劇院) is Toyo Ito's building of 58 curved walls and 29 sound caves, opened in 2016. You can walk the lobbies, the design shops and the Sky Garden on the roof from 11:30 to 21:00, every day but Monday. English architecture tours need booking 30 days ahead; the audio guide does not.

5. Wander Shenji New Village
Shenji New Village (審計新村) was built in 1969 and 1972 to house staff of the provincial Audit Office. After years empty, it is now a small village of independent shops, studios and cafes, with creative markets on some weekends.

6. Spend a morning at the National Museum of Natural Science
The National Museum of Natural Science (國立自然科學博物館) was Taiwan's first science museum, with three permanent halls (Life Science, Human Culture and Earth Environment) and a botanical garden whose big glasshouse holds rainforest plants. A good choice for a rainy day or with kids.

7. Visit the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts
The National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts (國立臺灣美術館) opened in 1988 and shows its collection in 15 galleries through changing exhibitions, with a garden outside to rest in. It is closed on Mondays, and it is in the same part of town as Shenji New Village, so put them on the same afternoon.

8. Stroll Taichung Park
Taichung Park (臺中公園) is the city's oldest park, laid out in the Japanese era. Its lake pavilion was built in 1908 to celebrate the opening of the railway across Taiwan, and it has been a symbol of the city ever since.
9. Find Rainbow Village
Rainbow Village (彩虹眷村) in Nantun is an old military dependents' village that a long-time resident, Huang Yung-fu, known as Rainbow Grandpa, began covering in paintings in 2008. The city changed its plans to keep it.
10. Go to a second night market
Fengjia is the famous one, but it is not the only one. Our night market guide covers the others, and which one fits your evening.
11. Drink bubble tea where you are
Taichung takes its tea shops seriously. Our guide to bubble tea in Taichung has the names to know and how to order.
12. Take home a box of sun cakes
Sun cakes (太陽餅) are the flaky pastry Taichung is known for, and the gift people carry home from the city.
13. Catch a show or a ballgame
See what is on at the National Taichung Theater or another stage in town, or spend an evening at a professional baseball game.

14. Visit a temple
Taichung's temples are working places of worship, and visitors are welcome to walk through quietly. Our temple guide covers where to go and how to behave.
15. Take a day trip to Sun Moon Lake
Taichung is the natural base for central Taiwan, and Sun Moon Lake is the classic day out.

Good to know: the theater and the art museum close on Mondays, and the Gaomei boardwalk depends on the tide, so check those three before you fix your days. Miyahara and Fengjia are open every day.
