Yes, Rainbow Village (彩虹眷村, listed by the city as 彩虹村) is open. It is a few old houses of a former military dependents' village in Nantun, covered in bright paintings by Huang Yung-fu (黃永阜), the "Rainbow Grandpa", who started painting the walls in 2008. Since then more than two million people have come to see them. The village is small, so give it 30 minutes to an hour, and combine it with lunch in Nantun.

What happened in 2022
In July 2022 the city ended the management contract of Rainbow Creative Co (彩虹文創), the company that had run the village, and planned to close it for structural repairs. On Saturday 30 July 2022, before the handover, 14 workers including the company's head were caught painting over many of the murals. The company called it a protest and claimed the paintings as its own work. The case went to court: the criminal charges ended in acquittal, upheld in June 2025, but in a civil case reported in July 2026 the High Court ruled the murals belonged to the city and ordered the defendants to pay about NT$857,000 in damages.
What it is like now
- Reopened 31 May 2023. The city's Cultural Affairs Bureau now runs the village. It reinforced the walls in 2022 and 2023 and reopened after about ten months.
- Repainted. The bureau says Huang's own works have been restored or repainted. Sections that were painted over are covered by a protective wall, which local residents, artists and students have painted with new work.
- Rainbow Grandpa. Huang Yung-fu died on 23 January 2024, aged 101. The paintings you see are his legacy rather than a work in progress.
- Paint your own. Visitors can paint a prayer card for free.
Good to know: there is no parking beside the village and only buses may stop on the road outside, so come by bus or taxi. It is a short visit that works well in the morning before it gets hot.
