Eating in Taichung

Sun cakes, bubble tea, noodles and markets, and how to get to each.

Taichung's food starts with two things it gave the rest of Taiwan: the sun cake and, by its own account, pearl milk tea. Add a breakfast bowl of da mian geng, a morning at the 1917 Second Market, a night market, and if you like, a big dinner: the 2026 MICHELIN Guide gives Taichung six starred restaurants and 23 Bib Gourmand picks.

We live in Tainan and visit Taichung often, as tourists who know the locals to ask. This section is the short version of what we would tell a friend: the dishes, the shops, and how to get there.

How eating in Taichung works

  • Small shops do one thing. The meatball shop has three items, the trotter shop has trotters. Order the house dish.
  • Carry cash. Restaurants and department stores take cards, but many small shops and market stalls are cash only (more on money and cards in Taiwan).
  • Go early. Market stalls and noodle shops open early and many close by early afternoon. Check hours and days off on Google Maps before you cross town.
  • Walk or take a taxi. Taichung's MRT has one line, and it does not run through the old center, so for most places on these pages we give the walk or the taxi from Taichung Station.
  • Book the big ones. Starred restaurants are small and fill up. Noodle shops and stalls take no bookings.

Good to know: the oldest food in the city is within about a kilometer of Taichung Station: Miyahara, the Second Market, Taichung Meatball and several Bib Gourmand noodle and goose shops. A morning on foot there covers a lot.

Where the food is

Central District, around Taichung Station, has Miyahara, the Second Market and the old family shops. West District has Chun Shui Tang's original teahouse, Shenji New Village and many of the cafes. Xitun, the newer city around City Hall, has two of the starred restaurants and Fengjia Night Market.
