Start with the two things Taichung gave Taiwan: a sun cake and a pearl milk tea. Then eat the city's own breakfast noodle, da mian geng, a Taichung meatball, a bowl of braised pork trotters and some goose, and in summer, jute leaf soup. For each dish below we name places that the MICHELIN Guide, the city government or established press have singled out, with how to get there.
Good to know: "Bib Gourmand" below means the place is on the MICHELIN Guide Taiwan 2026 Bib Gourmand list for good quality, good value cooking. Small shops often take cash only and many close one day a week, so check hours on Google Maps before you go.
1. Sun cakes (太陽餅)
A flaky pastry with a soft malt sugar filling, which the city's tourism site calls almost a synonym for Taichung. It began as a malt cake at Tai Yang Tang, a bakery opened in 1953 that later moved to Ziyou Road, where rival sun cake shops still stand side by side. The Taiwan Museum of Suncake, in a century-old building on Taiwan Boulevard, is open daily 09:00 to 17:30 (walk or taxi from Taichung Station).
2. Pearl milk tea (珍珠奶茶)
Milk tea with chewy tapioca pearls. Taichung's Chun Shui Tang says it created it in 1987, and Tainan's Hanlin Tea Room says 1986; a court ruled in 2019 that it did not need to decide. Drink it at Chun Shui Tang (original store), 30 Siwei Street, open daily 08:30 to 22:00 (taxi from Taichung Station).
3. Da mian geng (大麵羹)
Thick, springy yellow noodles in a broth they thicken themselves, with fried shallots, dried shrimp and dried radish. The city's tourism site calls it a snack found only in Taichung, usually eaten for breakfast. Yingcai Road Da Mian Geng was on the MICHELIN Plate list in 2020 and 2021 (taxi from Taichung Station).
4. Taichung meatballs (肉圓)
A big, translucent dumpling of peppery ground pork, topped with thick soy sauce and a sweet white sauce. Taichung Meatball (台中肉員) has been making them since 1933 and has only three things on the menu: the meatball, fish ball soup and glass noodle soup. It is a Bib Gourmand pick, a short walk from Taichung Station; Michelin warns that its hours are irregular, so call ahead.
5. Braised pork trotters (豬腳)
Pork trotter, hock and leg, braised for hours in soy until soft and sticky, over rice. Two Bib Gourmand shops do it. Fu Juang Yuan (富狀元豬腳) keeps its braising liquid of soy, rock sugar, chili and shallots simmering all day (taxi from Taichung Station). Fu Din Wang (富鼎旺) braises for up to four hours and serves it with a house chili sauce (taxi from Taichung Station).
6. Braised pork rice (爌肉飯, 魯肉飯)
Braised pork over rice is everywhere in Taiwan, and CNA traces Taichung's love of it to the nightclubs of the old center, whose performers ate late suppers at the Second Market. Night School Braised Pork Rice (夜間部爌肉飯) is a Bib Gourmand pick that gets busier the later it gets, with the rice served in a bento box with sides (taxi from Taichung Station). In the morning, eat it at the Second Market.
7. Goose (鵝肉)
Smoked or poached goose, and goose noodle soup. Fu Kuei Ting (富貴亭) has served goose noodle soup with dang gui for some 60 years, and smokes its geese with cane sugar (Bib Gourmand; walk from Taichung Station, about 1 km). Out in Shalu, Feng Chi Goose (鳳記鵝肉老店) is a fourth-generation Bib Gourmand shop that prepares fresh local geese daily (taxi from Taichung Station).
8. Old noodle shops
Two family noodle shops near Taichung Station made the Bib Gourmand list. A Kun Mian (阿坤麵), in its third generation, has served the same egg noodles with braised ground pork sauce and fried scallion for more than 60 years, with a dab of its sweet chili sauce (Bib Gourmand; walk from Taichung Station). No Name Noodles (上海未名麵點), about 70 years old, makes Shanghainese noodles without preservatives (Bib Gourmand; walk from Taichung Station).
9. Jute leaf soup (麻芛湯)
A green summer soup made from the young leaves and shoots of the jute plant, in season from May to September. The city's tourism site says Nantun grows the most and calls itself the jute leaf's new hometown. At the Second Market, Lu Rou Chiu (魯肉邱) serves it in summer next to its braised pork rice (walk from Taichung Station, about 1 km).
10. Something sweet
Miyahara, the restored 1927 eye clinic by Taichung Station, is where Taichung goes for ice cream, chocolates and pastries. Upstairs in the same building, Moon Pavilion (醉月樓) is a Bib Gourmand Taiwanese restaurant that cooks with Taichung jute among other local ingredients.

Where to try a lot at once
A night market, where you can work through many small snacks in one evening. Fengjia is the one most visitors start with.
