Xitun District is the modern face of Taichung. Its eastern edge is the 7th Redevelopment Zone (七期), a planned district of wide boulevards, glass towers, department stores and parks, built around the new City Hall and the National Taichung Theater. A short ride northwest, around Feng Chia University, is Fengjia Night Market, the city's biggest night out for food. The classic plan: the theater in the late afternoon, then Fengjia for dinner.
- MRT G Green Line: Taichung City Hall Station (110) for the theater and City Hall; Wenxin Yinghua Station (109) is the closest stop to Fengjia
- Bus Bus routes 300 to 308 along Taiwan Boulevard from Taichung Station; bus 161 from HSR Taichung Station straight to the theater
- How long an afternoon and an evening
Getting there
This is the one part of town the MRT serves well. Ride the Green Line to Taichung City Hall Station (110); the theater says to take Exit 1 and walk about 10 to 15 minutes along the park. From the high speed rail station, bus 161 runs directly to the National Taichung Theater stop. From the old town, take a Taiwan Boulevard bus (300 to 308) to the 新光/遠百 stop and walk about 8 minutes. → The MRT · City buses
What to see
National Taichung Theater (臺中國家歌劇院). Toyo Ito's opera house is built almost entirely of curved walls. It holds a Grand Theater and a Playhouse, shops, and a Sky Garden on the roof that is worth the trip even if you don't see a show. It is one of the five places we send everyone to.
- Hours Sunday to Thursday 11:30 to 21:00; Friday and Saturday 11:30 to 22:00
- Address No. 101, Section 2, Huilai Road, Xitun District
- Getting there MRT Taichung City Hall (110), Exit 1, then 10 to 15 minutes on foot; buses 60, 69, 75, 161, 358 and 658 stop at the theater

Taichung City Hall (臺中市政府). The city government's new building sits between Taiwan Boulevard and Wenxin Road: a glass facade and a suspended auditorium, beside the City Council building, with a park between the two that is a favorite gathering place. It is the landmark that gives the MRT station its name, and a pleasant walk on the way to the theater.
Fengjia Night Market (逢甲夜市). Around Feng Chia University, the night market spreads over Wenhua Road, Xitun Road, Fengjia Road and Fuxing Road. The city lists it as open from noon to 02:00; most of the food stalls get going after 17:00. There is no MRT station beside it: take the Green Line to Wenxin Yinghua (109) and then a bus or taxi, or a taxi from Taichung Station. A short plan
- MRT to Taichung City Hall (110) in the afternoon and walk through the park past City Hall.
- Go up to the theater's Sky Garden before sunset.
- Taxi or bus to Fengjia for dinner from the stalls.
Good to know: Fengjia is at its most crowded on Friday and Saturday nights. If you want space to move, go on a weeknight, or arrive early in the evening as the stalls open up.
