The Taichung MRT (臺中捷運) has one line, the G Green Line. Its 18 stations run from Beitun Main Station in the northeast to HSR Taichung Station in the southwest, mostly above Wenxin Road, and a trip from end to end takes about 36 minutes. The trains are driverless and two cars long. It is the quickest way between the HSR station, Nantun and Taichung City Hall; for the old center, Fengjia and the coast you will need a bus as well.
- Hours first trains 06:00; the last train leaves Beitun Main at 00:00 and HSR Taichung Station at 00:15
- Frequency every 5 to 8 minutes at peak times, 8 to 10 minutes off peak, 10 to 20 minutes from 23:00
- Fares NT$20 to NT$50, by distance
- Pay with EasyCard, iPASS or icash; a single-journey ticket; a contactless Visa, Mastercard, JCB or UnionPay card or phone wallet
- Kids under 6 ride free with a passenger who has a ticket (bring ID showing their age)
The stations
Each station has a number, shown on signs and maps. They run from 103a at Beitun Main up to 119 at the HSR station, so on the way to the high speed rail the numbers go up. In this guide we give the code with the name, like MRT: Taichung City Hall Station (Green Line, 110). All stations are elevated except the two ends, which are at ground level.

Hours and frequency
The first trains leave both ends of the line at 06:00. The last train toward HSR Taichung Station leaves Beitun Main at 00:00, and the last train toward Beitun Main leaves the HSR station at 00:15; stations in between see their last trains later, up to about 00:47. Taichung Metro does not publish a timetable, because the driverless system adjusts train times to conditions, but it does publish first and last train times for every station.
| When | Trains every |

| Weekday peaks (07:00 to 09:00, 17:00 to 19:00) | 5 to 8 minutes |

Fares
Fares go by distance, from NT$20 for short hops to NT$50 for the whole line. A few examples from Taichung Metro's fare table: HSR Taichung Station to Daqing, NT$20; HSR Taichung Station to Taichung City Hall, NT$30; HSR Taichung Station to Beitun Main, NT$50. Stored value cards pay the same fare as a single-journey ticket. Children's discounts are tied to Taichung's own children's card, so plan on a visiting child aged 6 or over paying the full fare.
How to pay
- EasyCard, iPASS or icash. The easy choice, since the same card works on the buses. Station Passenger Agent Offices sell cards with a Taichung MRT design for NT$100 (no stored value included), and you can top up at the ticket machines or the counter. → Cards and passes
- Single-journey ticket. Buy one from the machines or the Passenger Agent Office. It is valid on the day you buy it only, and the exit gate keeps it.
- Your own bank card or phone. The gates take contactless Visa, Mastercard, JCB and UnionPay credit and debit cards, and phones set up with Apple Pay, Google Pay or Samsung Pay. Use the wide accessible gate marked for bank cards (銀行卡感應), on the way in and on the way out. You pay the normal fare.
- QR ride codes. The same wide gates scan ride codes from EasyWallet, iPASS MONEY, icash Pay, LINE Pay Money and TWQR banking apps, which are mostly for people with Taiwanese accounts.
Passes
- MRT passes. A One-Day Pass (NT$120) covers unlimited rides until the end of service that day; 24-hour (NT$150) and 48-hour (NT$250) passes run from the first time you use them. They cover the MRT only and are sold at the Passenger Agent Office. With the longest ride at NT$50, they pay off only if you are riding a lot.
- Taichung Go passes. The city's QR code pass covers the MRT and every Taichung city bus route: NT$180 for 24 hours, NT$280 for 48 hours, NT$380 for 72 hours. This is usually the better buy for visitors. → Cards and passes
How to ride
- Check which way you are going: toward Beitun Main (numbers going down) or toward HSR Taichung Station (numbers going up).
- Tap your card, phone or ticket at the gate on the way in, and again on the way out. Single-journey tickets go into the slot at the exit.
- Watch the clock: you have up to 90 minutes between entering one station and leaving another, and 15 minutes if you leave by the same station. Go over, and you pay the minimum fare on top.
- Everyone over 6 needs their own ticket or card. Riding without a valid ticket costs the fare plus a penalty of 50 times the fare.
The rules
The one that catches visitors out: no eating, drinking, chewing gum or betel nut in the no food or drink areas, which means inside the gates and on the trains. Under the Mass Rapid Transit Act the fine is NT$1,500 to NT$7,500. Keep drinks closed in your bag until you are back outside the gates.
- No smoking, e-cigarettes included.
- Escalators. Hold the handrail and stand steady. With big luggage, a stroller or anyone unsteady on their feet, take the elevator.
- Luggage. Each item can be up to 165 cm long, with length, width and height adding up to no more than 220 cm.
- No skateboards, scooters or skates in stations or trains, and no sitting or lying on the floor.
- Pets travel fully inside a closed carrier. Guide and assistance dogs are welcome.
- Bicycles. A folding bike, folded and bagged, rides as luggage. A full-size bike needs a NT$70 bicycle ticket from the Passenger Agent Office, and staff let you through a service gate; bikes cannot enter or leave at HSR Taichung Station.
Good to know: the Green Line does not reach Taiwan Railway's Taichung Station in the old center. It meets the railway at Songzhu (104) and at the HSR station (119), where Xinwuri Station is next door. For the old center from the MRT, a bus or a short taxi ride is usually easier.
