National Taichung Theater

Toyo Ito's building of curves and caves, open to walk through six days a week.

The National Taichung Theater (臺中國家歌劇院) is a theater you can explore even without a show to see. Toyo Ito, the Pritzker Prize-winning architect, designed it as a building of curving walls and caves. During opening hours, any day but Monday, you can wander the lobbies, the curving corridors and the design shops, and go up to the garden on the roof. It is one of the five places we send everyone first.

  • Hours Tuesday to Sunday and national holidays 11:30 to 21:00; closed Mondays
  • Address No. 101, Sec. 2, Huilai Rd., Xitun District
  • Getting there MRT Taichung City Hall Station (Green Line, 110), Exit 1, then a 10 to 15 minute walk; 161 bus 161 from HSR Taichung Station

The building

The theater opened with a ceremony on 30 September 2016, after ten years of planning and building, and is now run by Taiwan's National Performing Arts Center. Ito called the design "Bottle the Art", and he describes it as architecture that can be listened to. Instead of floors held up by columns, the building stands on 58 curved wall units that form 29 sound caves, all different sizes, all opening into each other. The outside is glass and concrete, and only its outer edges are straight lines.

Look for:

  • The curved walls: walk any corridor and the walls bend into the ceiling and the floor. This is the whole point of the building.
  • The breathing holes: openings in the outer walls that let daylight in by day and send the lobby's light out at night. The building is at its most striking after dark.
  • The Sky Garden: the garden on the roof, where the theater says you feel the flow of air, sound and light through the building.
  • The cooling floor: pipes under the ground floor cool the lobby.

Shops and the Sky Garden

The theater's shops are on two floors. On the 1st floor are VVG Village, CLASSICO, Daintiest and Jean Cultural & Creative; on the 5th floor, WE SENSE UP floral & living. There is also the theater's own gift shop. The Sky Garden is cleared 15 minutes before the building closes, so go up before 20:45.
