Taichung Park (臺中公園) opened on 28 October 1903, under Japanese rule, and it is the green heart of old Taichung: big trees, a lake with rowing boats, and the Huxin Pavilion (湖心亭), a municipal monument. It is free, and an easy stop before dinner at Yizhong Street, the shopping and night market area next to the park.

What to see
- Huxin Pavilion (湖心亭). Built in October 1908 for the opening of Taiwan's north to south railway; Prince Kan'in Kotohito, who presided over the ceremony, rested here. It is a municipal monument, listed in April 1999 together with the Zhongshan Bridge beside it, and reopened after a restoration in May 2023. Free guided tours run on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month at 10:00 and 15:00, by reservation with the city's Cultural Heritage Office.
- Wangyue Pavilion (望月亭). A small tower on a mound, built in 1889 as part of the Qing dynasty city's north gate. It is the only piece of the old gates still standing.
- The lake. Rowing boats are rented out on the lake by a private operator; the Liberty Times reported NT$300 an hour in 2023.
After 1945 the park was renamed Zhongshan Park and the lake Sun Moon Lake, after the real one in Nantou; the name Taichung Park came back in 2000.
Good to know: come in the late afternoon, walk the lake as the light goes, then walk over to Yizhong Street for food. Note the pavilion itself closes at 19:00.
