North District sits just above the old town. Taichung Park, laid out in the Japanese era, is its green heart, with a lake and the pavilion that has been the city's emblem for more than a century. A few blocks east, the Yizhong Street area fills with snack stalls, drink shops and inexpensive clothes for the students of the nearby schools. On the district's western edge, at the top of the Calligraphy Greenway, is the National Museum of Natural Science, the best rainy-day or family stop in town.
- Train TRA Taichung Station, then about 1 km on foot to Taichung Park
- Bus Bus routes 300 to 310 from Taichung Station along Taiwan Boulevard to the 科博館 (science museum) stop
- MRT none nearby
- How long half a day; a full day with the museum
Getting there
Taichung Park and Yizhong Street are close enough to Taichung Station to walk, about 1 km. For the science museum, take any Taiwan Boulevard bus from 300 to 310 from Taichung Station to the 科博館 stop on the bus lane. From the high speed rail station, the museum suggests shuttle bus 159 to the 植物園 (Botanical Garden) stop on Xitun Road, or the MRT to Taichung City Hall (110) and then one of the Taiwan Boulevard buses. → City buses
What to see
Taichung Park (臺中公園). The city's old park, built in the Japanese era around an artificial lake. Its lake pavilion, the Huxin Pavilion (湖心亭), was built in 1908 to celebrate the opening of Taiwan's railway, has been a symbol of Taichung ever since, and became a city historic site in 1999. The main entrance is at No. 65, Section 1, Shuangshi Road. → Our full Taichung Park guide
Yizhong Street (一中街). About 540 m from Taichung Park, the Yizhong shopping district runs into the Sanmin Road shops. It is a student area, close to several schools, known for big portions at low prices, bubble tea, clothes and accessories. NightMarket.tw lists it as open daily from 10:00 to midnight and suggests going between 16:30 and 20:00. Its guide to Yizhong Street Night Market covers the snacks to look for. → Taichung's night markets
National Museum of Natural Science (國立自然科學博物館). Taiwan's first science museum, with six main exhibition areas, a Space Theater, a Science Center and a Botanical Garden with a greenhouse.
- Hours Tuesday to Sunday 09:00 to 17:00; closed Mondays

A short plan
- Morning at the science museum (not on a Monday).
- Walk south down the Calligraphy Greenway for lunch, or take a Taiwan Boulevard bus back toward the station. → West Taichung
- Late afternoon in Taichung Park.
- Evening snacks on Yizhong Street.
Good to know: the science museum closes on Mondays, and so does the art museum at the other end of the greenway. Save Monday for the parks, the old town and the night markets.
