The short answer: October to December. Taichung has a clear dry season, and it starts in October, when the city averages only 25 mm of rain over about three rainy days, with highs around 30°C falling to about 24°C by December. March and April are a good second choice. May to August is hot and wet, with the plum rains, afternoon storms and typhoon season, and those four months bring well over half of the city's yearly rain.
Taichung weather by month
These are the Central Weather Administration's 30-year averages (1991 to 2020) for its Taichung weather station. "Rain days" counts days with at least 0.1 mm of rain.
| Month | Avg high | Avg low | Rainfall | Rain days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 22.3°C | 13.4°C | 37 mm | 6.6 |
| February | 22.9°C | 14.2°C | 63 mm | 8.0 |
| March | 25.2°C | 16.4°C | 87 mm | 10.1 |
| April | 28.1°C | 20.1°C | 127 mm | 10.8 |
| May | 30.7°C | 23.1°C | 250 mm | 12.3 |
| June | 32.3°C | 24.9°C | 329 mm | 14.1 |
| July | 33.3°C | 25.5°C | 303 mm | 13.5 |
| August | 32.7°C | 25.3°C | 341 mm | 15.8 |
| September | 32.2°C | 24.6°C | 148 mm | 8.5 |
| October | 30.3°C | 22.2°C | 25 mm | 3.0 |
| November | 27.6°C | 19.0°C | 24 mm | 4.1 |
| December | 23.9°C | 15.1°C | 31 mm | 5.3 |
The pattern is simple: from October to January, Taichung gets only 24 to 37 mm of rain a month, and from May to August it gets 250 to 341 mm. Of the 1,763 mm that falls in an average year, more than two thirds falls in those four summer months.
Autumn (October to November): the best time
October and November are the driest months of the year, with three or four rainy days each. Days are still warm, around 28 to 30°C, and evenings are comfortable for night markets. It is a lovely time for Gaomei Wetlands at sunset and for walking the Calligraphy Greenway. If you can choose any time, choose this.
Winter (December to February): mild and dry
Average highs are 22 to 24°C and lows 13 to 15°C, and it rarely rains. Mornings and evenings feel cool, so bring a light jacket. Lunar New Year usually falls in this season.
Spring (March to April): warming up
Highs climb from 25 to 28°C and the rain picks up to about ten days a month, still light compared with summer. A good time to visit, and the season of the Dajia Mazu Pilgrimage.
Summer and typhoon season (May to September)
Hot and wet. Average highs reach 32 to 33°C from June to September, May and June bring the plum rains (梅雨), and August is the wettest month, with 341 mm over about 16 days. Rain often comes as heavy afternoon storms, so plan outdoor sights for the morning.
Taiwan's typhoon season officially starts on July 1. The Central Weather Administration notes that most typhoons strike in July, August and September, though they have arrived as early as late April and as late as November.
- Watch the forecast. When a typhoon approaches, follow the Central Weather Administration's warnings and check your train or flight.
- Expect closures. Museums close on typhoon days: the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, for example, closes whenever an official natural disaster day is announced.
- Stay in when it hits. Your hotel is the safest place. Stock up at a convenience store the day before.
