One Day in Taichung

Five places, one sunset and a night market.

One day in Taichung is enough for the five places that make the city: Miyahara's sweets in the morning, the little shops of Shenji New Village, Toyo Ito's opera house, the sunset over Gaomei Wetlands on the coast, and Fengjia Night Market to finish. It is a full day with one long ride out to the coast, so start by mid-morning and keep the afternoon moving.

Before you start

  • Not on a Monday, if you can help it: the theater is closed. → National Taichung Theater
  • EasyCard or iPASS in your pocket for the buses. → Transit cards
  • Look up today's sunset time and plan the coast around it.

Morning: Miyahara (宮原眼科)

By Taichung Station (Taiwan Railway). The restored 1927 eye clinic, now a shop of ice cream, chocolates and pastries. Come early, before the queues, and pick up a box of something to take home. → Miyahara guide · Central Taichung

Late morning: Shenji New Village (審計新村)

Bus or taxi from Taichung Station. A revitalized old neighborhood of small shops, cafes and, on weekends, markets, in the West District near the art museum. Good for coffee and a slow wander. → Shenji New Village guide · West Taichung

Early afternoon: the National Taichung Theater (臺中國家歌劇院)

Open 11:30 to 21:00 Tuesday to Sunday, closed Mondays. From Taichung Station, buses 5, 33, 73, 323 to 326 and 300 to 308 stop at Shin Kong Mitsukoshi, a 5 to 10 minute walk away; from HSR Taichung Station, the 161 shuttle stops at the theater. Toyo Ito's building of curved walls is worth seeing inside and out, and the rooftop garden is the place for a view over the new city. → National Taichung Theater guide · Xitun

Sunset: Gaomei Wetlands (高美濕地)

Taichung City Government lists bus 309 from Taichung Station, or a train to Qingshui (清水) and bus 178 or 688 from Qingshui Station. Check today's sunset time and the last bus back before you go. From the theater, a taxi is the quickest way out. The wide tidal flats, the boardwalk and the wind turbines along the shore are at their best as the sun goes down over the strait. → Gaomei Wetlands guide

Evening: Fengjia Night Market (逢甲夜市)

Taxi from Gaomei, or bus back toward the city. Graze your way through Taichung's street snacks. NightMarket.tw has the Fengjia market page with the nearest stops. → Fengjia Night Market guide · What to eat

Tweaks and swaps

  • Short on time? Drop the theater and head to the coast straight after Shenji.
  • Rain? Gaomei is not worth it in the wet. → The rainy-day plan
  • Another day? → The 2-day plan
