Taichung has a good rainy day in it, as long as it isn't a Monday. Two of Taiwan's big national museums are here, Miyahara is a warm, dry place to linger over dessert, and the National Taichung Theater is as good inside as out. Save Gaomei Wetlands and the day trips for a dry day.
Good to know: this plan does not work on a Monday. The science museum, the art museum and the theater are all closed (the museums open when a Monday is a national holiday). On a wet Monday, spend longer at Miyahara and in the cafes, and check what is on. → Tea and coffee
Morning: the National Museum of Natural Science (國立自然科學博物館)
Open 09:00 to 17:00, closed on Mondays. One of Taiwan's national museums, with enough to fill the morning; its calendar lists the few Mondays it opens. → Science museum guide · Museums
Lunch and dessert: Miyahara (宮原眼科)
By Taichung Station. Have lunch nearby, then ice cream or pastries inside the old eye clinic. → Miyahara guide · What to eat
Afternoon: the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts (國立臺灣美術館)
Free. Open 09:00 to 17:00 Tuesday to Friday and 09:00 to 18:00 on weekends, closed on Mondays. Galleries of Taiwanese art, enough for an afternoon. → Museum of Fine Arts guide
Evening: the National Taichung Theater (臺中國家歌劇院)
Open 11:30 to 21:00 Tuesday to Sunday. From Taichung Station, buses 5, 33, 73, 323 to 326 and 300 to 308 stop at Shin Kong Mitsukoshi, a 5 to 10 minute walk away; from HSR Taichung Station, the 161 shuttle stops at the theater. Walk the curving halls, and book a performance if there is one. → National Taichung Theater guide · Shows and concerts
If it clears up
Fengjia Night Market is open-air, so it is best when the rain stops. → Fengjia Night Market · Night markets
Tweaks and swaps
- Typhoon warning? Museums close on typhoon days when the government announces it, and mountain day trips close too. Stay put and check the notices. → Best time to visit
- Dry tomorrow? → The 1-day plan
