Changhua: A Day Trip from Taichung

A great Buddha on the hill and a railway roundhouse, one stop down the line.

Changhua City (彰化市) is the next city south of Taichung, a short train ride away, and it has two sights worth the trip: the great seated Buddha on Bagua Mountain, and a working railway roundhouse where locomotives are turned on a turntable. Pair it with Lukang on the same bus for a full day.

  • Train TRA Taiwan Railway from Taichung Station to Changhua
  • Bus 6936 Taiwan Tourist Shuttle Lukang Line from HSR Taichung Station: 27 minutes to Changhua Station, 33 minutes to the Great Buddha area, on the timetable

Changhua Roundhouse (彰化扇形車庫)

Taiwan Railway's Changhua depot roundhouse, built in 1922 and the only one of its kind left in Taiwan: a fan of engine sheds around a turntable that swings electric and steam locomotives in and out. Visitors register at the entrance, on the left.
