Sun Moon Lake

The 20 best restaurants at Sun Moon Lake

Five at each price, from lakeview tasting menus to NT$15 tea eggs, chosen by what Taiwanese diners rate.

These are twenty places to eat at Sun Moon Lake (日月潭) and in Yuchi (魚池), the township around it, five in each price band. To choose them we read what Taiwanese diners write in Chinese on Google Maps and iFoodie and in Taiwan's food press, not just English reviews, which mostly come from visitors. We checked each one against its own menu or the latest prices we could find, and left out places with weak recent reviews. Google ratings are as of November 2026.

The lake has two kinds of eating. The top two price bands are almost all hotel dining rooms in Shuishe (水社) and on the Hanbi peninsula, where Taiwanese families come for a lakeview dinner on a weekend away. Everything else is local: Taiwanese and Thao-style set menus in Shuishe and Ita Thao (伊達邵), the Thao village on the far shore, and snack stalls along its old street. Look out for president fish (總統魚) and the small qili fish (奇力魚) from the lake, crispy lake shrimp, rice cooked in bamboo, dishes made with 刺蔥 (Thao prickly ash), and black tea from Yuchi in everything from eggs to braised pork.

Prices are per person for a normal meal without drinks:

Good to know: most local restaurants close by 20:00 or 20:30, and many shut one or two days midweek, so plan dinner before you go. Hotel prices add a 10% service charge. The boats stop at 17:00 and bus 6669 round the lake runs only until early evening, so if you eat late on the far shore, book a taxi back. → Getting to Sun Moon Lake from Taichung · The lake boats

$$$$ Fine dining: over NT$2,000

The lake's big hotels run its most ambitious kitchens, and they are open to diners who are not staying. All five need a booking. We found no independent restaurant at the lake in this price band.
