Taichung Metropolitan Park

Trails, lawns and city lights on top of Dadu Mountain, one bus ride from Taichung Station.

Taichung Metropolitan Park (臺中都會公園) is a large park on the ridge of Dadu Mountain (大肚山), the long plateau on the city's western edge. Come for the trees and walking trails by day, or stay into the evening: the city's tourism office points to night views over Taichung on one side and Shalu on the other, and skies clear enough for stars. It is open every day from 06:00 to 21:00, and bus 324 runs there from Taichung Station along Taiwan Boulevard.

What to see

The busiest part of the park is the central recreation area on top of the ridge, where the ground is fairly flat. The park's map (2017) shows these places around it:

  • The visitor center (遊客中心), in the middle of the central area, with toilets and a wheelchair charging point.
  • Sundial Plaza (日晷廣場), the windmill area (風車區) and the outdoor performance plaza (戶外表演廣場), all close to the visitor center.
  • The Moon-viewing Corridor (賞月廊道) and the Star Observation Plaza (觀星廣場), the places to be after dark.
  • Gardens and ponds: a plant observation area, an aquatic plant area and an ecological pond on the west side.
  • Trails: the West Hiking Trail and East Hiking Trail run along the two sides of the park, with a bike lane and a step-free trail joining the main sights in the central area.

The park is also a certified environmental education site (since 2012), which is why you may meet school groups on weekdays.

When to go

  • For the night view: come in the late afternoon, walk the central area while it is light, and stay for the lights. The gates close at 21:00, so plan your bus back before then.
  • For a walk: mornings are cooler. The western trail is where locals come for their morning and evening exercise.
  • For stars: pick a clear night and head for the Star Observation Plaza.

Good to know: the park is a long way from the center. Check the time of the last 324 back to the city on the Taichung City Bus site before you stay after dark, or plan on a taxi. Bring water: the trails are long and the park is spread out.

Getting there

  • Bus 324: from Taichung Station (臺中車站(A月台)) along Taiwan Boulevard, past the science museum (科博館(專用道)), Taichung City Hall (市政府(專用道)) and Tunghai University (榮總/東海大學(專用道)), up to its last stop at the park (臺中都會公園). It is a long ride across the city.
  • From the MRT: ride to Taichung City Hall Station (Green Line, 110) and catch bus 324 at Taichung City Hall (市政府(專用道)) on Taiwan Boulevard.
  • Combine it with the greenway: bus 324 also stops at the science museum end of the Calligraphy Greenway, so you can walk the greenway in the afternoon and ride up for the evening.
  • Taxi: from Taichung City Hall Station or Taichung Station. → Taxis in Taichung
