Yizhong Street Night Market (一中街夜市), also called the Yizhong shopping district (一中商圈), is the night market closest to the old town. It takes its name from Taichung First Senior High School (臺中一中, "Yizhong" for short), and it is a student area through and through: cheap, generous snacks, bubble tea, clothes and accessories, in a tight grid of streets and lanes in North District. It is busy from the afternoon, so it pairs well with an hour in Taichung Park next door. Go between late afternoon and dinner, with cash.
- Hours 10:00 to 24:00 daily, per NightMarket.tw; each stall keeps its own hours
- Where Yizhong Street, Yucai Street and its lanes, Taiping Road and Yucai North Road, North District, beside Taichung First Senior High School
- Getting there Bus 159 from HSR Taichung Station to the 臺中一中 stop; or walk from Taichung Park (about 540 m); or a taxi from Taichung Station
How the area works
Yizhong is a day-and-night shopping district more than a classic night market. Taichung Tourism describes it as a crowded mix of street vendors, clothing shops and places to eat and drink, with Yucai Street full of stalls and most of the clothing shops in the small lanes. It sits near the Chung Yo Department Store (中友百貨) and runs into the Sanmin Road shops, and its customers come from the schools around it: Taichung First Senior High School, National Taichung University of Science and Technology and National Taiwan University of Sport. The city's tourism office says new fashions and gadgets often turn up here first, and that it is not as old as Fengjia, though several shops have been here for more than 20 years.
The boundaries are loose, so start on Yizhong Street and wander the side lanes. NightMarket.tw suggests going between 16:30 and 20:00, when the stalls are open and the evening crowd builds.
It is also very popular. The Liberty Times reported in September 2026 that Tourism Administration figures for January to June 2026 put Yizhong first among Taiwan's most popular night markets, ahead of Wenhua Road and Raohe Street, with more than 10 million visitors a year. On holiday evenings the streets fill completely, so a weekday is calmer.
What to eat
Big portions at low prices are the Yizhong style: fried chicken cutlets, lu wei (braised snacks you pick yourself), Fuzhou buns and a bowl of Fengren ice to finish. These are long-running stalls named by Taichung Tourism, NOWnews (August 2023) and NightMarket.tw. Hours are as NOWnews reported in 2023; stalls here change hours and sometimes move, so check before you go.
- Yizhong Fengren Ice (一中豐仁冰): one thing only, sour plum shaved ice with sweet red beans and scoops of milk ice cream. NOWnews dates it to 1946. In Lane 3, Yucai Street (No. 4-6), across from the school gate. 10:00 to 22:00.
- Shang He Yuan Lu Wei (上和園滷味): braised snacks such as chicken-feet jelly, dried tofu and duck wings, for more than 20 years. At No. 4, Yucai Street, on the busiest corner. 08:00 to 22:00.
- Yizhong Haoda Chicken Cutlet (一中豪大雞排): the giant fried chicken cutlet, one of the long-established shops Taichung Tourism names. NightMarket.tw places the original at No. 49, Yizhong Street.
- Yizhong Nameless Fuzhou Buns (一中無名福州包): pan-fried buns filled with cabbage and pork, five for NT$20 when NOWnews visited in 2023. A small stall at the mouth of Lane 6, Yucai Street, from 12:00 until sold out.
- Lao Chuang White Sugar Kueh (老窗白糖粿): fried sticky rice sticks rolled in sugar, in flavors such as taro, peanut and matcha. At No. 20, Yucai South Street. 13:00 to 22:00, closed Tuesdays.
Around them you will find stinky tofu, egg pancakes, bubble tea and fresh milk drinks, and the Liberty Times saw long queues for fried chicken and sweet potato balls on a busy holiday.
Good to know: bring cash in small notes; most snack stalls here expect it. Scooters use some of the lanes, so keep to the side. Stalls rarely have their own street numbers and some move, so if you cannot find one, show its Chinese name to a nearby vendor.
